Oyster Gardening in Mississippi
Welcome to the home of the Mississippi Oyster Gardening Program. A volunteer based project which focuses on education, restoration/enhancement, and research by bringing the reef to the people. Established in 2016, the program is developing relationships with citizen scientists to install and maintain oyster gardens for use in restoration and enhancement efforts throughout coastal Mississippi waters.
Our Gardeners, Garden Adopters, and agency partners make the program successful, and there are opportunities for everyone to get involved. Feel free to explore our website, learn what we do, and if you want to join us we are always recruiting new Gardeners, Adopters, and corporate partners.
The oysters from this program are NOT for human consumption. Their intended purpose is for restoration. Enhancement of natural reefs in Mississippi waters will provide additional habitat for numerous species (including commercially and recreationally important fishes), as well as reduce phytoplankton density and enhance water quality through filtration.
